In 2009, young people achieved 2.323.754 miles in additional voluntary exercise for the Million Miles Challenge.
Due to the success of the Challenge in 2009, Schoolchildren for Children is looking to achieve a sum total of over three million miles of additional voluntary exercise by young people in 2010.
The sum total of miles will be recorded on the home page of the website www.schoolchildrenforchildren.org on the "National Mileometer".
Once a school, club or organisation has registered then their mileage can be added to the total during the year.
Schools, clubs and associations can participate for as little as £1 per pupil.
Individuals, informal groups or families wishing to participate need to register at £1 per mile per person.
There will be a free Schoolchildren for Children – Million Miles Challenge campaign wristband for every young person who participates.
Donations can be made through Just Giving or sent directly to the Charity.
Donations of less than £10 need to be accompanied by a stamped addressed envelope that should be sent directly to the charity.
If a school decides to raise more than the £1, then fifty per cent of the monies raised can be shared between the school and ScfC.
Every school that participates will receive free pedometers. Pedometers will be given to schools at a ratio of approximately 1:10. Schools are more than welcome to purchase additional pedometers at the discounted rate of £2.50 per pedometer.
The Challenge is open to everyone.
Swimming, cycling, rowing and horse riding are all acceptable as are walking, jogging or running, however swimming distances will be multiplied by four (x 4),
And cycling distances will be divided by two (2).
All monies raised will go to help children in educational projects overseas all of which can be viewed on the website.
None of the monies raised by young people will be used for administrative costs - these are covered by separate sponsorship from individual patrons and donors.
Young people have a wonderful opportunity to increase their own health and fitness at the same time as becoming global citizens and being able to make a real difference for disadvantaged children overseas.
