Schoolchildren for Children are working in partnership with SPW Nepal to improve health & hygiene facilities and practices in three schools in Nawalparasi district:
- Janta Lower Secondary School, Palhi
- Rastriya Secondary School, Rupauliya
- Gyanodaya Secondary School, Kawasoti
Most of the schools in the Terai region own a large amount of land that has never been used properly. The three schools are developing this land into kitchen gardens, lunch farm projects thereby improving the environment and also offering an income generation resource for the schools. Green Clubs are school-based youth clubs run by local school children for the positive development of themselves, their schools and the wider rural community.
Through the support of Schoolchildren for Children the schools have been able to equip young people with the skills to build:
- Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) to safeguard their and their communities health and improve nutrition
- Improved toilets, incinerators and rubbish bins for better hygiene practices
- Kitchen Gardens for a much improved healthier diet.
The implications of young people learning these basic skills are wide-ranging as they take what they have learnt back into their communities. For example, as a direct benefit of Improved Cooking Stoves, young women can spend less
